This week the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) will hold its biennial convention in Houston. It seems things are heating up as a result of some actions of the Nueces County Chairman (CC) and the supporting actions of the State Chairman.
According to challenges the CC of Nueces County added over 100 delegates who had not been elected as required by party rule to the list of delegates for the County Convention. In fact, he did this during the county convention and ignored repeated requests to recognize "point of order" inquiries. The "new" delegates thus had a majority and proceeded to exclude others from a list of delegates elected at the county convention to attend the state convention. The County Chairman then refused to make available copies of the minutes of the precinct conventions to thwart efforts to expose his illegal actions. However, the Texas Thirteenth Court of Appeals has required him to do so and rejected the motions by the RPT to dismiss the suit and require damages for frivolous filings against the delegate seeking relief.
A Harris County judge has also issued a temporary restraining order to require the RPT to follow the rules of the party and the Texas Election Code at the State Convention this week because the State Chairman refused to agree to such changes. I issued a press release at the end of last week on these issues and have endorsed Paul Perry for RPT Chairman. Enough people have been thrown under the bus. It's time for new leadership of the RPT who will follow the party rules and the laws of the state of Texas.

Thank you for keeping us informed!
Well, that TRO was dismissed for want of jurisdiction, but that didn't stop the party spokesman from suggesting that the lawsuit was frivolous instead of merely in the wrong jurisdiction.
When did this become the party of just a few people? With all the abuse that the Christian Right took when it first got involved, it is really disappointing to see many of those same people dismiss anyone that is 'not of their tribe' when it comes to joining the party.
I know it is not all of us, but you'd think that our leadership would recognize we need more voters on our side in order to win, but everything I see suggests that they'd rather lose than allow the Paulites to actually join us.
Pretty aggravating.

I look forward to reading your blog regularly. You are always the voice of reason.

Is this really surprising to anyone?
This is the same attitude of arrogance and lawlessness that "our" party and its leadership has displayed when pushing through toll roads with secret contracts, HPV vaccine requirements, and the shenanigans around the Speakership of the House.
Power corrupts. I don't know that Paul Perry will change things significantly while the rest of the major Republican office holders stay unrepentantly ensconced. This smells like they're earning a Democratic takeover of the state government, just as has occurred at the national level.
I consider myself "involved" in politics...voting in every election, keeping up on issues and politicians...but I had NO idea this sort of mess was going on in the great state of Texas. Please, please, PLEASE keep us updated on this. I haven't heard about it anywhere else. I vote Republican - but when people ask me what my politics are I now say, "Frustrated." Do I want to associate with people like this?
thanks for keeping us informed, Tim. I'm a delegate to State Convention, and saw some things at our Senatorial District convention that made me uncomfortable; the GOP leadership seems nervous when the grassroots get active, but they're going against our very own "big tent" philosophy.
